Prototype $200 Tablet Runs Android, Chromium OS, Linux

$200 tablet PCs have been something of a pipe dream. There was the Crunchpad, which was supposed to be $200, but that didn't last very long, coming out as the $400 Joo Joo. If what Freescale showed off at Mobile World Congress becomes reality, though, the dream may finally come true.

The Next E-Book Reader: Color, Video and Nearly Unbreakable

If you thought the E-Ink screen on your Kindle or Sony Reader was the epitome of high-tech for the printed page, hang on to your hat. By the end of this year, newer models--with newer display technologies--will start to make today's e-book readers look like Model T versions. These next-generation readers will sport color displays with refresh rates capable of supporting video. They'll also use flexible display technologies--but that doesn't mean you'll be able to roll them up (yet). Rather, they will make the devices a lot less fragile.

Remember what life was like before the iPhone? Back when we had to print out maps for trips, do simple calculations in our heads, drive around to find a good restaurant, and watch YouTube videos on a device no smaller than a laptop? Dark times, indeed.

Why IPad is the 'Children's Toy of the Year'

Have you ever seen a 4-year-old play with an iPhone? It's actually kind of shocking. Kids take to the iPhone's multitouch user interface like they do trucks or dolls. They instinctively know that the iPhone is a toy, and they nag, cajole and harass their parents into letting them play with it.

Motorola Devour: a Lesser Droid

At first glance, Motorola's second Android phone on Verizon, the Devour ($150 with a two-year contract from Verizon; price as of 3/3/10) looks a lot like the Droid. But after spending some time with the new model, I realized that it couldn't be more different from its older sibling. There's a lot to like about the Devour, especially its social networking features, intuitive user interface, and sturdy design, but it also has some shortcomings.
