Telco Operations

In very simplistic terms, the operations of a Telco consist of delivering services, tracking the use of those services by each customer, and billing the customer for the use.

Not too long ago, this consisted of only land phone services and a small range of customer premise equipment. Today with multiple versions of wired and wireless phone services, satellite phone, wired and wireless broadband, wired dial up IP, new phone equipment every month, complex business communications systems and rate plans, geosynchronous rating and wrappings of security and multimedia content services, the complexity of performing such a simple three stage process is incredibly difficult. Add to that the need to future proof all systems that perform each stage [delivery, track and bill] against known and unknown future technologies, overwhelms most of those who work in the industry. Yet the customer demands the same simple interface into Telco offerings.

The complex chain of interrelated operations required to work together to deliver telecommunications services to customers, and to track and bill them must be both effective [able to perform every required task iteration] and efficient [ do so in a timely manner and able to adjust rapidly to new demands].

As these operations become longer and more complex, the number of points at which problems occur increases exponentially. And typical of those problems are revenue leaks – where a service is delivered but not billed and collected.

Applying BI to Telcos

There are a number of ways BI can be applied to telecommunications companies to improve profitability and performance, for instance:

Avoiding Loss of Profit

  • Network Performance
  • Revenue Assurance
  • Optimal Supply Chain

Improving Profit Earning Capabilty

  • Strategic Alignment & Execution
  • Market Demand Forecasting
  • Portfolio Management & Profitability Analysis
  • Operational Performance

To help stem the outflow of unbilled or unbillable network events, a revenue assurance program is used to identify, monitor, prevent and resolve any revenue losses.
